Maggio Wines, the region reflected in indigenous varietes and natural production methods
Crus from the beautiful Pettineo vineyard: Frappato and Nero d’Avola single varieties, and of course their blend, Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG. Indigenous vines and an entirely organic sector, which includes Cabernet Sauvignon in addition to Nero d’Avola. Then there are the international varieties and the Sicilian whites, Inzolia, Cataratto and Grillo, which we have discovered to be highly versatile and adaptable to these terrains historically renowned for their great reds. Specialities such as the Nero d’Avola Rosato, an extra-dry sparkling wine made from Frappato, and our dessert wine, a Moscato passito. And finally the Amongae, one of our favourites, a blend of Nero d’Avola, Merlot and Cabernet, linking the Sicilian lands with Europe’s most prestigious wine tradition.
Our range of twenty wines chronicle the history of our research into indigenous grape varieties and experimentation with international varieties, with each chapter containing stories related to our family, to the decades-long work, the passion that drives us to always look ahead, to bring to each bottle the essence of this territory.
Family Collection
The wines of this collection, all organic, are made from grapes from the Pettineo vineyards and are the outcome of a careful grape selection process and equally careful winemaking, maturation and ageing techniques.
The Vigna di Pettineo Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico, the only wine to bear a DOCG label in Sicily, is the queen of this line. The grapes that go to make it, 50% Frappato and 50% Nero d’Avola, in accordance with specifications, are also used to make two single variety reds: the young, fresh Frappato, and the full-bodied, well-structured Nero d’Avola, undoubtedly the most well-known Sicilian red grape variety.
The essence of this land can be found in every bottle, and the same may be said of Grillo, a variety traditionally associated with western Sicily and which has adapted perfectly to these soils revealing other characteristics waiting to be discovered.
Internationals
The wines of “Villa Maggio” brand are closely linked to the wine tradition of this territory, but they also represent the story of a family that, with tireless attention and thoughtful creativity, has sought the right combination of tradition and constant innovation. From these assumptions a line of wines obtained from international vines, such as Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio, derive from the territory in which a specific character and typicality are cultivated.
Organic
Out of our concern for the land and what it yields in the way of produce, we decided to focus on a return to basics, to entirely organic, sustainable agriculture, so that our vines can grow in an oasis of open-field plants and herbs, and bee hives, which produce honey while we produce our wine. In addition to the entire line of Crus from the Pettineo vineyard, including the organics, there are also the three wines of the Rasula line: Nero d’Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon and Catarratto.
SuperSicily
We reserve a special place in our range of wines for Amongae, a blend with an international flavour obtained by adding the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to the structure of Nero d’Avola.
Specialities
Our specialities: Luna Nascente (Moonrise), an extra-dry Charmat method sparkling wine made from Frappato grapes, and Passoro, a passito made from one of the world’s oldest grape varieties, Moscato – a perennial favourite for dessert wines.
Trendy & Fun
Some of the wines in this selection have been given the name Pithoi, a reference to the old containers used in this area for fermenting wine. The wines are young with a moderate alcohol content and are ready for drinking, for good everyday – and pleasurable – drinking.
Exclusive label
Three different variations on that most noble of Sicilian grapes, Nero d’Avola, and an excellent local version of Syrah: these are our four Exclusive Wines. Four reds, four exclusive lines for specific markets and devotees.
